This article extends the Crispo Mwangi challenge of 17 November 2024 to an enterprise-scale scenario. The challenge now involves factories around the world, each submitting reports on defective items. This global perspective adds real-life business complexity, requiring innovative solutions that are scalable, manageable, and provide actionable insights for management.
The Challenge: Defect Reporting at Enterprise Scale
In the original Crispo Mwangi challenge, individual factories submitted spreadsheets detailing defective items. This data is an overall summary for one factory. Also, the requirement in Crispo’s challenge, however, was not for defect-specific reports but a running total report of defect-free units across the organization.
The required Global Excel report would:
- Display a running total of defect-free units globally.
- Reset the running total whenever a defect is reported (as per Crispo).
- Allow management to drill down from the Global report into defect details to identify specific factories and take corrective action.
- The solution must work without any administration. ie. unattended, invisibly, in the background.
- Excel is your available and accessible agile tool.
Now, consider that:
- There are hundreds of factories within the country, and potentially more globally.
- Reports must handle data from all factories efficiently.
- The solution must anticipate global expansion, where factories in different countries will be added, requiring minimal changes to the reporting system.
- The local systems of recording defects may not necessarily be consistent.
What is your suggestion?
How does it compare with those solutions already submitted on LinkedIn?
How would you sell it to management?
How would you make your solution ‘teachable‘ to enable internal enhancement and extension?
